And You Thought Valentine's Day Sucks When You're Single...

Today we discovered we were overdrawn in our bank account. That was dumb. That also meant our Valentine's Day plans were shot. No romantic evening out on the town, hand-in-hand, as we'd (okay I'd) been picturing it for weeks.

So we had to wing it.

You know how everyone talks about spontaneity being the spice of life...the simple times are the best times...and all that kind of stuff?

Well they're wrong.

First we decided to watch Across the Universe because it had arrived from our Netflix queue. We thought, "What could be more fun on a Valentine's Day night than a little Julie Taymor action?"

Yeah, it basically sucked.

Then we thought, "Well--maybe we can watch Lost instead. Who doesn't love some mystical island loving?" So we called my parents to TiVo it. And when we got there, it had failed to record.

That sucked too.

Finally, to cap a desperately romantic evening, we came home and popped in the old standby--Star Trek: Voyager. And you know what? Star Trek is always there for you. Always teaching you right and wrong...how to live by the Prime Directive...show kindness to foreign aliens...and all that good stuff. It's the one constant in a world of chaos.

Kind of like a true Valentine.

Now maybe we'll go make Adah Part II.

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone.

P.S. Lanny asked me to include the following disclaimer: ALL of Valentine's Day didn't suck, because Lanny made us a delicious curry dish with freshly steamed asparagus. It was yummy--but such a detail didn't exactly fit the theme of today's post.

If it makes you feel any better, this was the 5th Valentine's Day out of 5 years married that I had a show. So I had class until 6:00, then call at 7:30. I guess we'll have to celebrate every other day of the year!
